Widnes 3rd XV hosted Birkenhead Park 3rds for their return fixture, the match also being a sponsored game. The Widnes team were pleased to have a number of players returning from injury, and were keen to get a win against the visitors in front of a good crowd at Heath Road. The home side took a while to settle into the game, allowing Park to get two early scores to lead 14-0. Widnes then found their form, with tries by Simione Mafi, converted by Neil Street, and Phil Barker. The home side turned around 12-14 in arrears. Both teams attacked and defended with strength, pace and determination in the second half. Birkenhead’s experience came through and they scored another 2 late tries to extend their lead. Widnes were not finished though, as Mafi cut through the defence to score his second. Street converted with the last kick of the game, so the visitors won a pulsating match by 26-19.
