When an Old Widnesian can't get to the Wids

John Loughnane20 Mar - 12:01

The Wids will come to the Old Widnesian

Charlie Morris has been contacting former playing colleagues, particularly 1976 Lancashire Cup winners, to reunite at the Wids as the club approaches the end of its centenary season. Health issues prevent Alan Evans joining the party this Saturday so Charlie decided to take two fellow ex-club captains on a home visit. Full back Les Whitfield and scrum half Crack Riley were in the same team that brought the first major trophy back to Heath Road. Alan was the veteran hooker that day, having played for Old Widnesians before the 1959 move and name change. He took part in the 2009 recordings that told the story of Widnes RUFC's first 50 years. There are numerous photos and newspaper clippings covering his 820 game career in our Heritage collection. The most obvious ones are in the "Widnes RUFC 50 years voices" video which can be found on Youtube and the companion book "If You Go Down to the Wids Today". Alan can be heard 3 minutes 40 seconds into the tape. I'll put the link on Facebook. The book and its two sequels "Over The Bridge" and "Gone With the Wids" are available free of charge to all members. There are copies on display in the Salt Room.
