I fired an email off to Roger Brady on Sunday, having been welcomed with an iphone photo by Messrs Rigby, Young, Morris, Nicholson and Davison the previous evening.
Questions: when was it taken, who are the players and opposition, what’s the kit, why aren’t they wearing club socks and what’s that car?
All I could tell them was that it was mid-60s and Roger was the lineout jumper (a rare breed in those days).
Here’s his reply:
“The club jerseys were a reserve first team strip to use when there was a clash or when the normal jerseys were still in the wash.
The players Scrum half: Mike Pinnington
Front of line, back to camera: Bob Grace
Next: Possibly Alan Jerram but not at all sure
Catcher: you got it right
Next in view: Terry Bailey
Running forward: Joe Penny (fairly sure)
Back: Ronnie Shuttleworth
I think the opponents were Port Sunlight. The reason for the different socks I don’t know and I can't recognise the car
Hope this helps,
Regards, Roger”
Now the appeal: ATTENTION CLUBMEN OF THE YEAR
Largely through the efforts of Darryl Harper (this photo is from his collection), I’m plodding on with my little Clubmen of the Year project. The idea is to allocate each winner the online equivalent of two A4 pages, comprising one page of text and four illustrative pictures. I don’t really want to use photos that have appeared in “If You Go Down to the Wids Today” but may have to in some cases.
I’m now at the stage where I’d like some approved pictures to accompany the words. I’ve got plenty that might meet with disapproval (John Ashton, John Hollins, Ian Nicholson, Graeme McGregor:- you have been warned).
The four suggestions are as follows:
A head and shoulders shot, one about the time of receiving the award (as Lord Lucan has pointed out to me, this may involve Mexican moustaches for some of you), an “action” shot – this can be playing, reffing, coaching, cutting the grass, serving beer, selling raffle tickets, club DIY etc – and one “social” picture: team, tour, club dinner, family, group of boozers etc.
I await your flood of responses, preferably by email to johnloughnane@hotmail.co.uk
